Vienna Wall Clock Keeps Stopping
Discussion in clock repair started by honeybee jun 16 2010.
Vienna wall clock keeps stopping. If the clock is too high on the back it can cause the pendulum to drag on the weights stopping the clock. If i add extra weight. If it not one of these issues it might be time to get a good clock tech to take a look. In the usa they are called vienna regulators but in the uk among other places they are usually called vienna wall clocks.
On a vienna regulator or longcase clock or other weight driven clock it s best to let it run until it stops before moving it. A clock that is out of beat is likely to stop because the pendulum is not receiving the optimum impulses to keep it swinging. Vienna clock keeps stopping. When setting the time stop at every chime spot hours hours sometimes hours and allow the clock to fully chime. Gently slid arm off the small mechanism with a flat spring. Pendulum arm about 20 long. It started about two years ago and each time i would change the battery and it would start again but hours days or weeks later it would just stop.
Put it back on the wall and the pendulum stops after a few minutes it just swings slower and slower until it stops. There are exceptions to this rule but usually setting the hands backwards will damage the clock. Hi i have aquired a large vienna clock with an 8ins dial i have cleaned the clock but it keeps stopping after a couple of hours for no apparent reason it came with standard sized weights but unsure if they are origanal. But don t worry it s not terminal and can be cured.
Clock was working fine took it off wall and removed pendulum to paint the wall. If it s only slightly out of beat it could run for days but will eventually stop earlier than it should. Free the hands to restart the clock. If it s badly out of beat it will stop within a few minutes.
If you can t wait tape up the lines to stop them unravelling. Gently move the hands with a finger to see if they are touching the dial the glass or each other. True vienna regulators are weight driven clocks although there are some spring driven clocks generally referred to as vienna regulators. If it is too high in the front it may be touching the chime rods again causing it to stop. Move the pendulum back and forth with your fingers. If you don t hear a ticking sound the clock s hands are probably stuck. The clock tilts forward at top due to hook on wall have packed a bit of folded tissue under bottom edge to sit it more perpendicular to the wall.
Then detach the weights while you lift the clock. I love and collect vienna regulators. It wasn t that expensive but holds sentimental value so i don t want to replace it.
